In Our Own Voice Action Fund was founded in 2022 to educate and mobilize voters on key Reproductive Justice policy issues that impact the lives of Black women, girls, and gender-expansive people and encourage Black voters to elect Reproductive Justice champions in local, state, and federal races nationwide.
Our motivation could not be more clear. Black women, girls, and gender-expansive individuals are not monolith, and we do not live single-issue lives. We face structural barriers designed to undermine our rights and uphold injustices. Black women, girls, and gender-expansive individuals have less access to high-quality reproductive health care, experience poorer health outcomes, and face significant obstacles to achieving our full economic, social, and political power. These barriers are rooted in white supremacy, misogyny, and homophobic ideology. And too often, racist and sexist ideologies are reinforced by government policies and cultural institutions – sometimes even in our own homes and communities.
In Our Own Voice Action Fund meets this moment. The Reproductive Justice movement is inherently intersectional by design. We are not just a movement for abortion access and family planning; we are a movement to expand racial and gender justice and to fight for the full spectrum of reproductive health, including maternal and infant health. We are a movement for economic justice, criminal justice, LGBTQIA+ liberation, and more. Every issue that impacts Black women, girls, and gender-expansive individuals impacts our movement – so we must mobilize support for the human right to protect our autonomy and to access resources that allow us to make healthy decisions about our bodies, our families, and our communities.
In Our Own Voice Action Fund works to expand the footprint of Reproductive Justice champions by providing resources and technical assistance to candidates and state partners as they drive forward a Reproductive Justice agenda that creates lasting change in our communities. We also dedicate ourselves to mobilizing Black voters nationwide to elect leaders who commit to elevating Reproductive Justice through legislation.
When we elect Reproductive Justice champions, our communities are stronger, our policies are more equitable, and our institutions are better prepared to ensure Black women, girls and gender-expansive individuals can thrive.
Our work won’t be easy. Building full economic, social, and political power will take time. But we cannot afford to wait any longer to fight back against the ongoing attacks on Black women, girls, and gender-expansive individuals.
